Death note american remake?
Hmm at first when I heard this I was a bit skeptical but it seems that it is in the works , and frankly I am estatic
The list goes on and on.
TokyoGraph reports that an American remake of Death Note is in the works:
American movie studio Vertigo Entertainment is apparently working on a remake of the popular franchise “Death Note,” which has been turned into three live-action films in Japan. The news was quietly revealed in production notes for the horror films “Shutter” and “The Strangers.”
According to IMDB, Vertigo Entertainment has acted as a production company for remakes such as The Grudge, Dark Water, The Departed, and The Eye.
The sharp-eyed folks at ShockTillYouDrop.com noticed a mention in the bio of producer Doug Davison (included in Universal’s Production Notes for the recently released horror film The Strangers), indicating that writers Vlas and Charles Parlapanides are scripting a live action American version of Death Note, the high concept manga series by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, which has already spawned three live action movies in Japan as well as a hugely popular anime series that is currently running on the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.
According to the Production Notes, Davison’s Vertigo Entertainment (no relation to DC’s Vertigo Comics) has commissioned the screenplay, which certainly makes sense since Vertigo has been mining Asian cinema for years having produced American versions of the manga-based Dark Water, the three J-horror-based Grudge films, and The Departed, which was based on the Hong Kong police action drama Infernal Affairs. Roy Lee, who along with Davison runs Vertigo, also produced The Ring, the American version of the J-horror film Ringu, so the company’s interest in Death Note appears very plausible.
Vertigo Scribbling Death Note Remake

Within Universal's production notes for The Strangers it has been revealed - under producer Doug Davison's bio - writers Vlas and Charles Parlapanides are penning an American remake of Death Note for Vertigo Films. The brothers are currently overseeing the development of CW's upcoming television series Undercover, directed by John Stockwell (Turistas).
Death Note, Shusuke Kaneko's adaptation of the popular manga, has become a cult hit and spawned a sequel Death Note: The Last Name. The story concerns a student, Light Yagami, who discovers a notebook that gives him the ability to jot someone's name down within its pages and kill someone.
Vertigo, in addition to producing Strangers, is also at work on a remake of Anguish.
The list goes on and on.
Re: Death note american remake?
American remakes are the bane of my existence. Was it not enough they tore the beauty of Life on Mars away from the British shores? Despite the fact it was specifically made as a show to highlight the problems and revelations of my homeland within that time period...no, they stole the show away and began one of the "remakes" with a whole new cast irrepressably inferior to the original.
Now they must steal Death Note too? From what I've heard they even have the lead fellow from Highschool Musical playing Light Yagami...I for one am dreading this beyond belief.
Now only will we now be faced with something I do NOT doubt for a second will be immensly worse than the original show (anime has a flavour that a Western thriller film cannot match) but we will also be plauged by the people who enjoy the US version and have never seen the anime. What if it follows a totally different chain of events to the anime/manga? Other than being set in California or the like...the game faced with a legion of "fans" who claim to know all about Death Note but actually knowing nothing.

You can never be happy about anything can you?
Any way I do agree with you but still I am hopeing for the best since Vertigo is making it, mainly I want to see it because I love remakes of all kinda I really don't know why. Any way I also pray it won't be Zack Efron from high school musical I think it would make it worse then anything. In my oppinion he is to peppy to play somone as dark and disturbed as Light Yagami. Hopefully Vertigo does justice to it I have heard rummor they are working with the creators of the first death note movie and the to creators of the manga but that may just be B.S. Further more Vertigo has done a few nice thirller movies in the past. I am not sure how they will handle this one though it is much diffrent then any one that they or any one else in america has done.
One more things I was thinking. I don't know why, but I wouldn't mind having Light win I mean yes he is a vendictive @** hole. It would make a nice twist in the end of the movie for people who have also seen the anime or read the manga. So near does die or somthing and maybe let Kira end up ruleing the world....
(I belive somkthing like this would take some serious balls in the American movie industry)
Just my thoughts.

Re: Death note american remake?
It might be interesting If Kira wins, it would sell alot more than having it be the same, and letting Near Win, or L...I dont know what exact tme, but its spose to be comming out in 2010

Re: Death note american remake?
Lou Taylor Pucci playing L is not a terrible choice, but still, it just shouldn't happen in my opinion. This movie in general, should NOT happen. Admittedly it would be nice to see a version in which Light wins overall - since we have an L victory in the Japanese movies - but this will ruin so much flavour of the series for those who do not know it. The three things I would hope the US never made a remake of, are the three things they ARE making remakes of.
1. Death Note.
2. Life on Mars
3. AKIRA
All of which not set in the correct country, and with muddled stories and characters that make me want Hollywood to collapse...gah, now I'm making myself angry. Bottom line - Leave my bloody treasures alone or you'll pay for it some day.

Re: Death note american remake?
The Zac Efron thing is a long running JOKE, which its origins are explained on http://www.zacefroniskira.com/
... I find it seriously doubtful they'll have a Disney star be in a non-Disney movie, especially considering that he SHOULD be busy with High School Musical 3 . . . *gags*

Re: Death note american remake?
Personaly I think Chase Crawford should play light, he does look like him quite a bit. Also he could actully play kira in my oppinion.

Re: Death note american remake?
I don't know what you're talking about with that, but I watched the Fathom Events special Death Note movie part 1--same cast as the Japanese film, same movie exactly, just dubbed in English. I've got a ticket reserved for Part 2 coming for 2 nights only--october 15/16, I'm going the 15th. Don't know if tehre's a 3rd part or not, and if they get f***ing Zach Effron to play Light or Ryuuzaki or anyone other than the person who gets killed for being a homosexual, I am going to shoot somebody. In the foot. With a .50 caliber rifle.
